We had abortions - The End of Silence
The documentary "We had abortions - The End of Silence" depicts the struggle of women against the German Abortion Law 218th
On June 6, 1971 to explain the magazine "stern" 374 women - among them the actress Senta Berger and Romy Schneider and women's rights activist Alice Schwarzer: "I had an abortion!" It will be a day that goes down in history.
Workers, teachers, students, housewives and nine prominent actresses have signed this appeal. The Federal Republic is the head. The immensely courageous confession of women is yet to be punishable. The action is the catalyst for a broad women's movement. But thousands of women emancipate themselves from the traditional roles as housewives and mothers, develop a new self-confidence, allow yourself joy and pleasure and go professionally independent pathways.
Model for the initiative was an action in France. On April 5, 1971 appeared in the "Nouvel Observateur" a petition of 343 women who reported having an abortion. The signatories included Simone de Beauvoir, Jeanne Moreau, Françoise Sagan, Agnès Varda and other known personalities.
40 years later, the documentary explores some confessors interior of time on again. They tell how the actions have shaped their lives in Germany and France. We hear from the feminist Alice Schwarzer, the actress Senta Berger and Ulla Böll, niece of Nobel laureate Heinrich Böll, and the film and theater director Ariane Mnouchkine and the suffragist Anne Zelensky. They tell the story of four decades in Germany and France, which begins with the brutal hopeless situation of women who choose from a social, professional or psychological necessity late 60s to an illegal abortion. They make it clear that even the more liberal legislation today does not change the timeless existential dilemma of the pregnant woman to have to decide for or against a child.
